Silver organza evening gown on the runway at New York Fashion Week 2026

By Catherine Colubriale, couturier, designing in Sydney for more than 30 years

For a gala, charity ball or red carpet in Sydney, Catherine Colubriale Couture offers two routes: a bespoke gown from $3,500 designed with Catherine over six to twelve months, or a gown from the Evening Couture Collection made to your measurements in four to six weeks. Which one fits depends mostly on how far away your event is.

What makes a gown work on a red carpet?

A red carpet or gala photograph is taken from the front, the side and often the back, under flash and in mixed light. A gown that holds up has a few things in common:

  • Structure where it counts. A corset or well-built bodice keeps its line through hours of standing, sitting and dancing. Looks 4 and 8 from New York are both built on corsets.
  • Fabric with depth. Velvet, silk dupion, duchess satin and Chantilly lace read richly in photographs. Our evening gown fabrics guide explains how each behaves.
  • One clear idea. A colour, a split, a sculpted bow or body jewellery. Scarlet velvet with pearl chains is a single, strong statement.
  • Movement. Organza, tulle and a tiered skirt move as you walk, which is what a camera catches.
  • A fit that lets you forget it. Made to your measurements, so you can stand, sit, eat and dance without adjusting all night.

Have you dressed charity balls and galas before?

Yes. Catherine has collaborated with the Australian Couture Ball, the Heart Foundation, the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Greek Young Matrons Association, and was a guest judge at Pageant of the World 2018. She has made gowns for personalities including Jo Casamento, Marie Patani, Shelly Horton and Maria Venuti, shown on runways at Sydney Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and Doltone House, and in September 2026 showed eight looks at New York Fashion Week.

How far ahead should I plan a gala gown?

Work backwards from the date on your invitation.

If you attend the same ball every year, it is worth booking your consultation as soon as the next date is announced. For a bespoke gown, we aim to finish two weeks before the event. Our guide to evening gown fittings and timeline walks through each stage.

Which New York looks suit a gala?

  • Look 8, The finale: a black Chantilly lace corset over a tiered silk dupion skirt. The gown that closed the show, and a natural fit for black tie.
  • Look 4, Silver organza: a silver corset with a sheer organza skirt, painterly gold hem and sculpted ruffle.
  • Look 6, Scarlet velvet: scarlet velvet with pearl-chain body jewellery and a thigh-high split, for a red carpet.
  • Look 2, Gold and amethyst: a gold-embroidered one-shoulder mini with a pleated amethyst drape and a sculpted bow, better suited to a cocktail-hour gala than black tie.

Each is made to order to your measurements in four to six weeks. See all of our options on the evening gowns page, or book a consultation and bring your invitation.

Questions

What should I wear to a charity ball in Sydney?

Check the dress code on the invitation first. Most charity balls are black tie, which usually means a floor-length gown. Our black tie guide explains each code.

How much does a gala gown cost?

Bespoke gowns start from $3,500. Evening Couture Collection gowns are quoted at your consultation, and also start from $3,500.

My gala is in five weeks. Is that too late?

It may be tight. The Evening Couture Collection is made to order in four to six weeks, so call us on +61 2 9922 4193 to talk it through.

Can I wear a short dress to a gala?

It depends on the dress code. A cocktail gala can suit a shorter style such as Look 2, while black tie usually calls for a full-length gown.
