For a Year 12 formal, start looking three to six months ahead, agree a budget as a family early, and choose a dress the student feels completely comfortable in. At our atelier there are two routes: a gown from the Evening Couture Collection, made to order in four to six weeks, or a bespoke gown designed from scratch, which starts from $3,500 and takes six to twelve months. For a formal sooner than four to six weeks away, call the atelier on +61 2 9922 4193 to talk through your timing.
This guide is written for both students and parents. The formal belongs to the student, and the best outcome is a dress they love, chosen with a plan the whole family is comfortable with.

When should we start looking for a formal dress?
Check the date with the school first. Then work backwards:
| Time before the formal | What to do |
|---|---|
| Six to twelve months | If a bespoke gown appeals, book a consultation now. Bespoke takes six to twelve months. |
| Three to six months | Agree a budget, collect ideas, and visit shops or ateliers together. Consider the made-to-order collection. |
| Two to three months | Decide on a dress. A collection gown needs four to six weeks of making plus a margin. |
| Four to six weeks | Choose shoes and underwear and bring them to any fittings. Plan hair and makeup. |
| Last two weeks | Final try-on with everything. Break in the shoes at home. |
| Less than four to six weeks | Call the atelier on +61 2 9922 4193 to talk through your timing. |
Year 12 is a busy year with exams. Starting early means the dress is sorted before study gets intense.
How much should we budget for a formal dress?
Budgets vary widely between families, and every one is valid. Talk about it openly before shopping, so there is no disappointment in the change room. Remember to include shoes, accessories, hair and makeup in the total.
Here is how the Evening Couture Collection and bespoke compare with ready to wear as a type of gown:
| Ready to wear | Evening Couture Collection | Bespoke | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A finished dress in a standard size | One of four New York looks, made to order to measurements | A gown designed from scratch with Catherine |
| Time | Usually quick, plus any alterations | Four to six weeks | Six to twelve months, three to five fittings |
| Price | Varies by label | Quoted at your consultation | From $3,500 |
If the formal is sooner than four to six weeks away, call the atelier on +61 2 9922 4193 to talk through your timing.
Which styles suit a school formal?
- A-line: fitted at the top and flaring to the floor. Comfortable, easy to dance in and suits almost any formal.
- Column or sheath: sleek and modern, best with a split for walking and dancing.
- Ball gown: a real occasion piece. Think about the venue, the car and the dance floor.
- Short or cocktail: some schools welcome short dresses, others prefer floor length. Check the school’s guidelines.
- Jumpsuit: a confident choice that is easy to move in.
Our evening gown styles guide explains each shape, and our colour guide helps with choosing a shade. The best choice is the one that feels like the student, not the one that is trending.
What should we bring to a dress appointment?
- Photos or screenshots of dresses the student loves, and any they don’t.
- The shoes planned for the night, or ones with a similar heel height.
- The underwear planned for the night, or a smooth set in a skin tone.
- The school’s dress guidelines, if there are any.
- The formal date and the budget.
- One or two people whose opinion the student trusts. Too many voices can make it harder to decide.
Students are welcome to bring a parent or guardian, and we recommend it. Consultations at our atelier are $150, credited in full to the gown, and can be moved free of charge with 48 hours’ notice.
How do we choose accessories?
Pick one focus. A detailed dress suits simple jewellery; a plain dress can take statement earrings or a necklace. A small bag big enough for a phone, a lip colour and a ticket is plenty. For cooler evenings, a wrap or jacket chosen with the dress looks better than one added on the night.
How can the dress stay comfortable for dancing?
- Test the movement. In any try-on, sit down, lift the arms, walk and dance a little.
- Choose the right length. Hems should clear the floor in the shoes being worn.
- Break in shoes. Wear them around the house for a week. Pack flats or a second pair.
- Mind straps and fastenings. Make sure the student is comfortable in the bodice and that it stays in place without adjusting.
- Plan for a long night. Formals often start early with photos and run late.
