"...a beautiful, caring young woman..."

A custom made wedding dress with detachable skirt

Jamie is the daughter of my very good friends. I had the pleasure of watching her grow up into the most beautiful, caring young lady. She is very special to me and when she asked me to design her wedding dress and bridal party gowns, I was thrilled and couldn’t wait to get started.

The ideas started flying into my mind and I was excited to share them with her.

We began by looking at lots of different laces and fabrics for inspiration. Jamie’s style was elegant, dramatic and timeless. A high class wedding was about to be created.

I  sketched a few ideas that suited her style. I decided her petite body would suit a straight classic dress with emphasis on the Italian style embroidered lace. We used this spectacular lace all over the body of her tube style dress which gave Jamie an elongated look and feel.

Jamie wanted something for a train but didn’t feel a heavy satin fabric would be her style so I suggested we use a double silk organza for her detachable overskirt. The detachable skirt was  lightweight and very easy for Jamie to carry on a 6 metre train. The train was embellished with Italian style embroidered lace to complement the whole look and Jaime’s personal style.

I went on and designed for her 3 bridesmaids who wore fitted bodices attached to a pencil skirt. We used 3D floral lace in nude tones to cover the entire bodice and finish the lace cascading over an organza peplum that was attached at  the waist. A very sexy and modern bridesmaid dress made from Italian style embroidered lace.

I designed the mother of the bride in a gorgeous blue to compliment her eyes. It was absolutely stunning on her. I used imported Italian embroidered lace, all over her one shoulder tube style dress. It was emphasised using a plain blue satin, that had a bow finish.

The whole bridal party looked magnificent and I was so lucky to have shared this journey.

What did Jamie think about getting a wedding dress made in Sydney?

“Catherine not only created my dream wedding dress but made the whole experience so magical. From the very first appointment to the final fitting both myself and my bridesmaids were so happy. We felt comfort as she was so kind and honest with everything.

She also created the most amazing dress for my mother, my bridesmaid and flower girl. Highly recommend her and cannot wait for another event to have a reason for her to create another dress for me.”

Why is a wedding dress with detachable skirt a good idea?

Let’s face it, every bride wants to look amazing on their wedding day but also have the freedom and flexibility to walk, sit, pose and dance while remaining comfortable. A wedding dress with a long train can be impractical in some situations depending on the venues for your ceremony, photography & reception.

In these situations the bridesmaids or an assistant would be used to help carry the train which can be quite heavy, but it adds to the burden of moving around. During summer this can be really annoying too for all involved. Not to mention if you are getting married in a park or on the beach it is easy for the train to get dirty, muddy or wet.

The solution to this scenario is to design a wedding dress that has a detachable skirt. For custom-made wedding dresses, a detachable skirt refers to a design feature where the skirt of the gown can be removed or detached, transforming the dress into a different silhouette or style. This versatile option offers brides the flexibility to switch up their look throughout the wedding day without needing to change into a completely different dress.

A detachable skirt typically works in the context of getting a custom-made wedding dress:

  • Two-in-One Design: A detachable skirt allows the bride to have two distinct looks in a single dress. The gown can have a full, voluminous skirt for the ceremony with a train, creating a classic princess or ball gown silhouette. After the ceremony, the skirt can be detached to reveal a sleeker, more fitted silhouette for the reception, such as a mermaid or sheath style. It can be re-attached for photo sessions, bridal dance or other moments where the complete dress needs to be seen or photographed.

  • Practicality and Comfort: Brides may opt for a detachable skirt to enjoy the best of both worlds: the drama and grandeur of a full skirt for the ceremony and the freedom of movement and ease of dancing in a lighter, more streamlined silhouette for the reception.

  • Customisation: With a custom-made wedding dress, the detachable skirt can be tailored to the bride’s preferences and specifications. This includes choosing the fabric, embellishments, and details for both the skirt and the underlying silhouette. The detachable skirt can be seamlessly integrated into the design to ensure a cohesive and flawless transition between the two looks.

  • Personal Style: Detachable skirts offer brides the opportunity to express their personal style and creativity. They can play with different textures, lengths, and designs to create a unique and customised wedding gown that perfectly reflects their vision for their special day.

A detachable skirt adds an element of versatility and customisation to a custom-made wedding dress, allowing brides to curate their dream look from ceremony to reception with ease and elegance so they can walk or dance easily.

A few common questions about a wedding dress with detachable skirt

A custom made wedding dress is designed so that it is the same size and shape as your body. It can emphasise all of your elegant features perfectly. For this wedding dress design it was also created with a skirt that could be detached.

A tube style wedding dress, also known as a tube top wedding dress, is a type of bridal gown characterized by its strapless bodice. The bodice of this style typically resembles a tube top, hence the name, with no straps or sleeves. Instead, it stays in place through either internal boning, a snug fit, or sometimes with the support of built-in cups or adhesive materials.

Tube style wedding dresses often feature a straight or slightly curved neckline that wraps around the bustline, providing a clean and minimalist look. The absence of straps or sleeves allows for a sleek and streamlined silhouette that accentuates the shoulders, collarbones, and upper body.

These dresses can vary widely in design, ranging from simple and understated to elaborate and embellished. Some tube style wedding dresses may have intricate lace overlays, beading, or embroidery adorning the bodice, while others may feature sleek satin or chiffon fabrics for a more contemporary aesthetic.

Tube style wedding dresses are popular choices for brides seeking a modern and romantic look. They offer versatility, as they can be styled with various accessories such as statement necklaces, bolero jackets, or belts to personalize the overall bridal ensemble. Additionally, they are often favored for destination weddings or outdoor ceremonies due to their lightweight and airy feel.

Tube style wedding dresses exude elegance and sophistication, making them a timeless option for brides looking to make a statement on their special day.
