Catherine Colubriale fitting a wedding dress in her Sydney atelier

By Catherine Colubriale, couturier, designing in Sydney for more than 30 years

A custom made wedding dress from Catherine Colubriale Couture is designed and sewn by hand in our Dulwich Hill atelier, for brides from every part of Sydney. Bespoke gowns start from $3,500, take six to twelve months and need three to five fittings, so the key is planning your visits. If time or travel is tight, our Bridal Couture Collection is made to your measurements in four to six weeks.

Where do our brides come from?

Our atelier is at 422 New Canterbury Road, Dulwich Hill, in the Inner West. Dulwich Hill is served by the light rail and train. Brides are welcome from anywhere in Sydney, including:

  • Western Sydney: Parramatta, Westmead, Harris Park, Auburn, Granville and beyond.
  • The Eastern Suburbs, where our former boutique on Oxford Street, Paddington was. Read about our move from Paddington.
  • The North Shore.
  • The Sutherland Shire and the south.

Many of the brides in our stories came through a friend or family member. Samantha came through her friends, and Lia was recommended by a friend and went on to have many dresses made before her wedding gown.

How many trips will I make?

A bespoke gown is built on your body, which is why it fits the way it does. That means coming to the atelier more than once. A typical bespoke gown involves:

  1. Consultation. Champagne or coffee and a conversation about your wedding, your style and your budget.
  2. Design and fabric. Your hand-drawn sketch, and silks and laces chosen together. This can sometimes happen at the first visit.
  3. Toile. A test gown cut to your measurements, so the shape is right before your fabric is touched.
  4. Fittings. Three to five, spread over the months your gown is being made.
  5. Collection. Your gown is finished two weeks before the wedding.

Over six to twelve months, that is several trips. Our wedding dress timeline shows how they usually fall.

How do I plan visits around my week?

Treat your fittings like any regular appointment and plan them early. These habits help brides who are travelling across the city:

  • Book the next fitting before you leave. You will get the time that suits you, rather than whatever is left.
  • Pair a visit with something else. You might combine a fitting with a lunch, a day off or a catch-up with their mother or bridesmaids.
  • Bring the people who matter to the visits that matter. The consultation and the final fitting are the two most worth sharing.
  • Bring your shoes and underwear to every fitting from the toile onwards, so the hem and fit are judged correctly. Our fittings guide has a full checklist.
  • Tell us about changes early. If your body is changing, through weight change or pregnancy, we can time fittings around it. We have dressed many brides in that position, including Belinda.
  • Plan the wedding morning. Catherine offers a wedding morning dressing service. Ask about it at your consultation.

Can I come on a Saturday?

Yes. The atelier is open by appointment on Saturday from 10am to 3pm, as well as Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm. If you work full time or travel from further away, book Saturday fittings ahead.

Is there a faster option?

If a bespoke timeline does not suit your week or your wedding date, consider our Bridal Couture Collection. The four white looks from New York Fashion Week 2026 are made to order to your measurements in four to six weeks, and quoted at your consultation.

If you would rather buy a finished dress close to home and take it with you on the day, a bridal shop in your area may suit you better, and that is a perfectly good choice. Our guide to bespoke, made to order and off the rack compares all three.

How do I book?

A private consultation is $150, credited in full to your gown, and can be moved free of charge with 48 hours’ notice. A 50% deposit begins the design, and every gown is quoted individually with no hidden costs. On the booking form you can choose a budget of $3,500 to $5,000, $5,000 to $10,000, or $10,000 plus.
